Sarah Chase: Revelations

Sarah Chase

The following is the 3rd chapter (draft) from Book II of the Prophecy Trilogy, “The Dark Queen”:

“Doran, we need to talk now!” Sarah stated vehemently as she pressed the intercom button to the cockpit.

“Judging by the unpleasant tone in your voice, I’m not sure that’s a good idea seeing as to how I’m flying the plane and all,” Doran replied back sarcastically.

“Just open the door!”

Doran complied reluctantly as Sarah entered the cockpit and sat down in the co-pilot’s chair.

“Do tell.  What is the emergency?” he asked, keeping his eyes fixed on the sky in front of him.

“Dr. Nemitz is…was,” she corrected herself, “my grandfather???”

“Yes,” Doran responded in his thick Scottish accent.

“When were you planning to tell me?”

Doran took a deep breath and sighed. “Well, I suppose now seems like a good time.”

“You think?” Sarah retorted. “I’m tired of being kept in the dark, Doran.  If I’m going to be a part of this team then I want to know everything; about Nemitz, the Guardians, our mission…”

There was a long silence in the cockpit as Sarah waited impatiently for a response.  Doran had actually hoped Dr. Nemitz would have filled her in better, but that’s the way it had always been with him.  The good doctor gave out ‘pieces’ of information, but the only one who ever had the privilege of knowing the entire plan was himself.  Doran decided he owed the daughter of Alyssa Walker more than that.

“You’re right,” he conceded. “No more secrets or half-truths.  Ask me anything.”

Sarah was surprised by Doran’s quick surrender.  After her first impression of him at the cabin, she expected the great grandson of Artair to be more stubborn.

“How exactly am I related to Nemitz?” she asked, feeling slightly more at ease.

“He’s your grandfather, on your father’s side.  I’m sure you’re aware that Albert, Dr. Nemitz that is, sent someone to protect your mother when Sadeana was born?”

“He mentioned it,” Sarah replied, thinking back to their conversation the night she met Sadeana. “Dr. Nemitz told me that my mother fell in love with a man while she was living in Hallows End and that he was my father.”

“That’s correct.  I take it the good doctor didn’t mention that this man also happened to be his son, Tobias?”

“No,” Sarah responded, the frustration in her voice apparent. “He neglected to tell me that.”

“Aye, no surprise there.  After Tobias’s disappearance, Albert rarely spoke of him.  He was too devastated; Tobias was his only child.”

“Tobias Nemitz.” Sarah spoke the words out loud so that she could hear her father’s full name for the first time.  In truth, she didn’t harbor any strong feelings over not knowing him; her step-father was all the father figure she’d ever needed growing up.  Still, she couldn’t help but be curious about the man who’d contributed to half of her genetics.

“What was he like?” she asked.

“He was a good friend; probably my best friend.  Loyal; Always good for a laugh; Dashing, I suppose,” Doran chuckled.  He turned his head toward Sarah so that his eyes could make contact with hers.

“You look like him, ya’ know?  Sure, you have your mother’s dark hair, her green eyes…but I can tell Tobias’s ‘fire’, his passion, burns within you.  I saw that the moment you walked into the cabin.”

Sarah half-smiled, thinking that ‘fire’ was just a nice way to say she had his temper.

“What happened to him?”

“A few days before your mother found out she was pregnant, your father and I had to leave on a small mission outside of the U.S.  There was a rumor spreading that a dragon had been spotted in the Pir Panjal Mountain Range near the border of India and Pakistan.  We also had, on good authority, that there were Lemurian forces gathering in that same general area; so Tobias and I went to investigate.”

We spent weeks in those mountains and found nothing, not a dragon nor even a single Lemurian.  Tobias still wanted to check out one more lead in Northern Pakistan and I had to check in with the Order so, we agreed to rendezvous back in the States afterward…only, he never made it back.”

Sarah stared out the window and imagined what her father might look like if he was still alive.  She started to picture a man in his early 60’s, but realized that might not be accurate given he was the son of a sorcerer.

“How old was Dr. Nemitz, er, my grandfather?” The word ‘grandfather’ didn’t exactly roll off Sarah’s tongue.  Her brief relationship with him had mostly consisted of him keeping secrets and deceiving her.

“Hmmm…I don’t really know,” Doran replied. “Several hundred years old, I imagine.  I know my father, Doran II, met him back when they were young rebels infiltrating the Holy Roman Empire during the early 1500’s.”

“Does that mean that my father or I, for that matter, will age slower?”

“I’m afraid not.  I don’t know a great deal about sorcerers, but here’s what Albert told me.  The only way a sorcerer can live longer than the average human is by surrounding themselves with immortal beings.  Somehow, a sorcerer can tap into an immortal’s life energy without actually draining it from them.”

Sarah imagined that had to play a part in Dr. Nemitz’ motivation for founding a town for immortals.

“As the legend goes,” Doran continued, “it was one of the last living Gods, an Atlantian by the name of Paeon, who engineered the sorcerer ‘gene’ into a handful of humans.  It was an attempt to create a more symbiotic relationship between humankind and immortals.  However, the gene turned out to be recessive, and only presents itself in every third generation.  Good to know should you decide to have children someday.”

The thought of having children wasn’t anywhere close on Sarah’s radar.  She was about to switch gears and ask about their mission, but there was one more question burning in the back of her mind.

“Did you love my mother?” Sarah remembered Tom mentioning the two of them possibly being romantically involved.

“That I did,” Doran affirmed. “I always did.  Even when Tobias was still around I loved her, though of course, I didn’t say anything.  Your father and I were close friends and I didn’t want to risk our friendship over what I imagined was just a bad case of ‘puppy love’ at the time.”

“Puppy love, huh?” Sarah wasn’t buying it.

“Well…after Tobias disappeared and your mother left Hallows End with you, I realized just how much I did truly love her.  I never told anyone else, but I remember promising myself that should I ever get a chance to see your mother again, that I would tell her how I really felt.”

“And when she returned to Hallows End?”

“Those were the happiest years of my life.” Doran’s eyes glazed over as he replayed the memories of him and Alyssa together in his mind.

After another long period of silence, Sarah began feeling uncomfortable and decided she was ready to move on to current events.

“So, now that I know all that, let’s talk about the mission.”  Sarah leaned forward in her chair and looked out the front windshield, realizing she had never been in the cockpit of a jet before.  It was actually quite exciting. “Angelique mentioned that we’re heading to D.C. to meet up with this Agent Rose guy.  Is he arranging for our flight to Romania?”

“Sort of,” Doran replied. “We’ll actually be flying to London from D.C., where we’ll be splitting up into groups.”

“I see.” Sarah’s gaze moved over to Doran.  She could definitely see how it was that her mother fell for him.  He had a rather ‘rugged’ appearance with his beard and unkempt hair, but underneath that it was obvious he was a very handsome man. “Why are we splitting up?”

“Before we go knocking on the Dark Queen’s doorstep, there are a few things we need to get in place.  I’ll be travelling with Brittany to St. Andrews in Scotland.  She’ll be disguised as Sadeana just long enough for me to pay one last visit to the Order in hopes of discovering their true intentions for the child of prophecy.”

“I thought their plan was to kill her?”

“Aye, that’s the popular theory.  However, we don’t know that for sure and we need to find out if they have any alternative motives for wanting your sister.  Odessa has her claws deep within many powerful organizations; it’s entirely possible that she’s pulling the Order’s strings as well.”

“That seems like a big risk to take.”

“It is.  But I have close friends on the inside; friends that have helped me avoid being found out about for the last hundred years.  The only reason the Order accepted me into their cult was because they believed I might be able to find the child of prophecy.  Should I not return, anyone who was close to me will surely be killed.  By going back one more time I can get the information we need and escape with those who have been loyal to our cause.”

“And the rest of us?” Sarah could feel her protective instincts kicking in as she waited for Doran to explain what his plans for Sadeana were.

“You’ll be visiting the high councils of the immortal races to let them know that we’ve secured the child of prophecy.  In the past, we’ve simply asked them to send representation to our headquarters in Vienna, but if war is coming that won’t be enough.  We must have an audience with every member of their respective councils, and the only way that will happen is for us to go to them.

Mason will be staying in London to speak with the High Council of Vampyres.  They’ve never been very supportive, but we must try, given the circumstances.  Josh and Marie are heading to Cairo to meet with the Lycan Council.  I would normally join them, but they should do fine on their own; we have many friends within the Lycan community.  You, Angelique and Sadeana will be traveling to the Island of Crete to visit the Siren Council.  I realize it’s not ideal to send Sadeana anywhere right now, but she’ll be safest with you.”

Sarah didn’t like the idea of splitting up, though she understood the reasoning behind it.  Time was not a luxury the Guardians had any longer.  Odessa had surely received word by now that the ‘demon’ army had failed at the cabin, and now Sadeana was out in the open where she would be easier to catch.

“And after we’ve secured what support we can from the councils, then do we travel to Romania?” she asked.  “Will it just be us or are we expecting the immortal councils to lend us soldiers for our mission to the Black Peak?”

“First we’ll rendezvous at our headquarters in Vienna.  The Atlantean Council is located there and can protect Sadeana while the rest of us head to the Black Peak.  It will just be the six of us, for now; the war will have to wait until we know better what the Dark Queen’s agenda is and whether or not we’re successful in killing Keara.”

“What exactly do we hope to gain if I take Keara’s place in the prophecy?”

“Our fundamental strategy has always been to stop Odessa from getting the children of prophecy.  She already has half of what she perceives she needs in Keara and that’s dangerously close to her accomplishing her goal.  If we can take that away from her then it’s a step in the right direction.”

“I get that, but it seems like we’re setting ourselves up for an eternal game of ‘cat and mouse’.  At some point we’re going to have to take Odessa down, right?”

“Aye.  Eventually we will have to put an end to Odessa and her Lamiai.  Accomplishing that feat, however, brings its own unfathomable challenges.  It could easily cost every Guardian his or her life.  Not to mention that while the immortal councils have been somewhat supportive of our cause in keeping the children of prophecy from her, an assassination of the only living Titan on Earth might not be so easily approved.  The Guardians are not our own military task force; they are meant to serve the best interests of both immortals and humans.”

Sarah could understand the politics that were at play, though she had never had much patience for them. “I’m surprised Odessa hasn’t risen up previously.”

“She’s tried a couple of times over the Millennia.  The only thing that’s stopped her is the Atlantians.  You see, after the fall of Lemuria and Atlantis, the remaining Atlantians abandoned the views of their creator, Poseidon, and instead followed more in the footsteps of Zeus.  They became the protectors, if you will, of the human race.  That’s the reason “Angels” have been depicted with such favorable imagery among human religion.”

“And Odessa really believes that having the children of prophecy is what’s going to make the difference for her this time around?” Sarah questioned. “Tom mentioned something about the weapon of Atlantis and that Odessa might have it in her possession.  Is there anything that connects the children of prophecy to it?”

“None that we’re aware of, but you’re right to be questioning the Dark Queen’s motives.  Even though we’ve never been able to confirm it, we suspect she has both dragons and a formidable Lemurian army at her disposal.  The only logical explanation for her stalling then is if she believes she needs something more to guarantee her victory.  Regardless of the power that Sadeana might have, it’s hard to believe that she would make enough of a difference to sway the outcome of such an epic conflict.”

“Unless Odessa has recovered the weapon of Atlantis and for some reason needs Sadeana to power it?”

“Indeed.  That’s the real question, isn’t it?”

Sarah Chase: The Guardians

Sarah Chase - The Guardians

The following is the 2nd chapter (draft) from Book II of the Prophecy Trilogy, “The Dark Queen”:

Sarah’s gaze danced upon the white clouds in the morning sky as she stared out the window of Dr. Nemitz’ private jet. Her thoughts had been drifting in and out since they’d boarded the plane in San Francisco en route to their next destination, Washington D.C. Doran had encouraged everyone to get some rest during the flight, but Sarah was much too alert for sleep.

Turning her head back toward the jet’s interior, she observed Sadeana sleeping soundly in the cushy, leather seat facing her. Sarah still couldn’t get used to the idea that this young woman, who appeared to be barely twenty years old, was actually her older sister. For a brief moment, Sarah imagined what it would have been like had her mother decided to stay in Hallows End rather than move to Portland; to have shared a childhood with her sister and grown up around immortals.

Sarah glanced over at Brittany and Mason sitting across the aisle way, both of them appearing to be sleeping as well. She thought about Brittany having lost her mother recently and how tough an experience that was when she’d gone through it. For so many years, Sarah had harbored a substantial amount of anger toward her mother for disappearing. Now that she knew the truth, she was finally experiencing some much needed closure on the subject.

“If you’re planning to stare at me next…don’t.”

Mason’s deep voice startled Sarah.  She hadn’t noticed it previously, but was fairly certain that she was detecting an English accent.  He was wearing dark sunglasses making it difficult for Sarah to see his eyes, though clearly he was now awake. If not for having saved her life when she was younger, Sarah would have thought Mason to be one of the most intimidating individuals she had ever met. He was well over six feet tall, wore a long black overcoat with leather boots, and had a scar on the top of his shaved head the size of an ax blade. He also had several tattoos of lions on his arms and neck that were only slightly darker than his ebony colored skin.

“Do you remember me?” Sarah felt herself hold her breath as Mason shifted in his seat.

“Of course I do, Ms. Chase.”

Silence filled the small interior of the jet as Sarah contemplated what to ask him next. She had spent less than 24 hours with the Guardians and already she could tell that Mason wasn’t exactly the warmest of personalities. She studied him for a moment, taking notice of his unkempt goatee and the scar atop his bald head.

“So, what was the deal?” Sarah continued, her eyes fixed upon him. “Did Dr. Nemitz send you to be my bodyguard or something?”

“Dr. Nemitz wanted me to keep you safe,” he replied. “After that night, however, I told him that you needed to learn how to protect yourself. That’s why I left you Kayman’s card.”

Sarah’s mind quickly flashed back to the night she was attacked in front of her apartment building in Eastern Los Angeles. She had already sustained a couple of broken ribs and a concussion when Mason suddenly appeared out of the shadows to take down her attackers. He left only a few moments after having dropped her off at the hospital, but the next day she woke up to a vase of blue orchids sitting next to her bed along with the card of a local mixed martial arts master.

“Why didn’t you train me instead?”

“Kayman is a much better teacher than I am,” he responded gruffly. “Besides, I’m not fond of teenagers.”

“Don’t let him fool you,” Sarah turned around to see Angelique sitting in the next row of seats, her head buried in a harlequin romance novel. “Mason’s not very fond of anything.”

“That’s not true,” he retorted, “I’m fond of being alone.”

“Were you born a vampire?” Sarah asked him. She was determined to learn more about the man who had saved her life. All these years she had held on to the fantasy that he was her ‘knight in shining armor’, as silly as she knew that sounded. The reality, however, was not matching up with her illusion.

“Vampires are the only immortal species that aren’t born into what we are, with the exception of the occasional werewolf,” Mason replied, annoyed. “We’re a cursed species; a blasphemized version of the Dark Queen’s treasured Lamiai race.”

“How did they…”

“Listen,” Mason interrupted. “I’m not really the story telling type. All you need to know is that I’m angry at the world for what I am and that translates into someone pretty good to have on your side.”

“Most immortals,” Angelique spoke up as she placed her book on her lap, “are very proud of our heritage and history. Sarah, my dear; why don’t you come sit next to me and leave ‘Mr. Mason’ to his brooding.”

Sarah was disappointed with the results of her attempted interview of Mason and decided that a fresh start with a more willing participant was in order. She sat down in the chair facing Angelique while Josh and Marie remained sleeping on the other side of the small aisle way.

“So, my dear, how are you holding up?” Angelique’s eyes were soft and kind. She had long black hair and light brown skin that was aptly displayed thanks to her low cut, aqua marine dress. The dress matched her eyes which Sarah could have sworn reflected the ocean within them.

“Me? Fine…I guess.” Sarah didn’t necessarily believe that, but it sounded good. She didn’t feel like being the one interviewed, however, so she quickly shifted the conversation to Angelique.

“You’re a siren, correct?”

“Yes. The ‘Siren of Destruction’ as Doran likes to put it.”

“What are your ‘special abilities’?” Sarah asked, slightly embarrassed to hear her question spoken out loud; she imagined she sounded like some teenage boy talking about superheroes in a comic book.

“Sirens are able to transform our bodies into a liquid state for short amounts of time. We also have extremely powerful vocal abilities, in song, persuasion and, when necessary, destruction.”

“Are you from…around here?”

“Most of my family lives in Chile, though our line originates from the island of Crete. Sirens were actually the first species Poseidon created, his initial intent being that our race would populate his beloved kingdom of Atlantis. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful at creating a male version of our species that could survive after the mating process.” Angelique paused for a moment to allow for a slightly devious effect.

“As a result, we became a failure in his eyes. That’s when Poseidon created the Valkryie or ‘Angel’ race, if you will, in the image of both him and his Queen, Nike. The Siren race was then cast aside, forever cursed to see the male members of our species sacrifice themselves in order to continue our existence.”

“Yikes,” Sarah responded with widened eyes, “that’s a bit rough.”

“Makes love a tricky thing amongst our race,” Angelique continued, “though at least our men can say they die happily.” Sarah couldn’t help but laugh at Angelique’s comment.

“How did all of you, the Guardians I mean, come together?” Sarah curled her legs underneath herself as she rearranged her position in her chair. There was something about Angelique that she found incredibly absorbing.

“In the mood for a story are we?” Angelique’s voice sounded as if it had the ring of the ocean within it every time she spoke. “Well, first of all, I must tell you that only the good doctor and Doran really call us ‘The Guardians’. I know it sounds very noble and all, but a few of us, myself included, probably aren’t worthy of such grand titles.”

Sarah got a confused look on her face, but made no attempt to interrupt.

“I’m actually a professional thief, my dear, though I like to think of myself as the female version of Robin Hood. I’ve stolen from some of the most corrupt men on this planet and redistributed their wealth, if you will, to those less fortunate. Of course, I do keep a piece for myself so I’m hardly a Saint. Dr. Nemitz heard about me through his friend at the FBI, Agent Rose. He knew I was a siren and he came to me with an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

“Which was?” Sarah asked with intrigue.

“Ha, look at the Police Detective getting all excited about hearing more about your law breaking ways.” Josh had woken up and was now sitting upright, amused by Sarah’s interest in Angelique’s back story.

“I…was just asking Angelique about how all of you came together.”

“Oh, I heard.” Josh grinned. “Do continue with your story, Angie.”

“Anyway,” Angelique glared at Josh, “Dr. Nemitz offered me a large sum of money if I would come to Hallows End for the weekend to hear about a special cause that he was recruiting for. I told him I wasn’t the ‘cause joining’ type, but I’m also not a girl who can resist an easy score. By the end of the weekend, for reasons I still can’t completely explain, I gave the good doctor his money back and became one of the first members of the Guardians.”

“I remember that weekend,” Josh chimed in. “Marie and I were there along with Doran, Mason, William, a few others and…your father” he paused momentarily, allowing for Sarah to process the fact that her father had been a member of the Guardians. She regretted not having asked Dr. Nemitz more about her father when she had the chance. After she learned that Elise had killed the good doctor, she worried that no one else would be able to fill her in on who her father was and what had happened to him. Now that Josh had informed her that he had been a member of the Guardians her hope returned.

“There were more of us back then,” he continued. “about fifteen, actually. Everyone who came that weekend joined the cause…except for one.” Josh’s demeanor suddenly changed, his smile fading. Marie, who had also woken up, reached over to comfort him as her hand touched his.

“Who didn’t join?” Sarah asked.

Josh swallowed hard before answering.

“My brother, Jacob. I had convinced him to come with Marie and me to Hallows End. I told him that it was a chance for us to make up for Lucifer’s poor decisions of the past and the many mistakes our race has made since; that it was an opportunity to restore the nobility once prominent among the Lemurian bloodline that Hades himself brought into this world.”

Josh paused for a second as he took a deep breath and scratched his eyebrow.

“Well, half way through the conference Jacob got upset when our mission was revealed. He shouted at me that no Lemurian should ever take up arms against the mother of our race. I tried to explain to him that Odessa had given up on the Lemurian race eons ago, but he wouldn’t listen. Instead he called me a traitor and…I haven’t heard from him since.”

“Lemuria was the Kingdom of your ancestors, correct?” Sarah asked, remembering the stories that Dr. Nemitz and Tom had told to her.

“Yes; unfortunately, Lemuria is simply spoken of now as if it were a myth; an excusable offense by the human race, but not one that should be accepted by Lemurians. Instead, my race now refers to themselves as the ‘demon race’, a term first coined by none other than Poseidon himself. It was not complimentary back then and it certainly shouldn’t be used to refer to our race now.”

Sarah’s face suddenly turned red. “I’m so sorry; when I first met you at the cabin; I didn’t mean to.”

“Ah, no worries,” Josh replied. “As I said, for a human to use the term is understandable; you don’t know any different. All your life I’m sure that you believed Lemuria to be a fairy tale, just like Atlantis.

Sarah thought to herself that she had actually never even heard of Lemuria before her arrival to Hallows End.

“Still,” she insisted, “I shall be sure to refer to you and your kind as Lemurians from this moment forward. I may be human, but I can no longer claim ignorance as an excuse.”

“Oh, you might still meet a few of us you’d prefer to call demons,” Josh teased. “Those gentlemen we ran into at the cabin, for instance. It’s taken thousands of years for their particular denomination to breed themselves into a bunch of hulking, raging warriors. As you can tell by my appearance, however, not all Lemurians are of that sort.”

Sarah admitted that Josh looked nothing like the demons they had encountered at the cabin, nor the ones that she had read about in the journals of Artair. Josh was well under six foot with handsome features, a head full of hair and a much slighter build. The way he moved in combat, as Sarah had observed, was more reminiscent of a ninja than a barbarian.

“What about you, Marie?” Sarah looked in Josh’s wife’s direction. “I heard Doran refer to you as the ‘resident Angel’; are you truly an angel?”

Unlike Angelique’s long flowing locks, Marie’s dark blonde hair was pulled back in a pony tail, giving her a ‘girl-next-door’ kind of look. She had an extremely kind face with light features and hazel eyes that made Sarah feel as though she could instantly trust her.

“My race has been called that, yes. Unlike the term ‘demon’, angel is actually quite complimentary. Those of my ancestors who survived the destruction of our home, Atlantis, populated much of what civilization now refers to as Europe. Though our roots were rather war-like, we eventually became a very peaceful race.”

“Can you fly?” Sarah asked.

“Indeed I can. My wings appear as tattoos on my back that emerge when I call upon them to do so. I’ll have to show you some time.”

“Have any of you met this Agent Rose that we’re on our way to meet up with?” Sarah was very curious about him considering that Sadeana had mentioned to her just before they had reached the cabin that he was on standby to take her place on the Guardians if she declined the ‘opportunity’.

“Rose is an FBI Agent who Dr. Nemitz befriended several years ago,” Angelique responded, “Handsome fellow. Might be your type, although I doubt we’ll stay in D.C long enough for you to get to know him very well.” Sarah looked at Angelique like she was crazy.

“Oh I’m terribly sorry dear. Are you shy? Or, are boys not your thing? I certainly didn’t mean to offend you if…”

“No,” Sarah laughed, “I like boys just fine. It’s just, I’m a little focused on the mission, that’s all.”

“Ah, my dear,” Angelique leaned over and placed both her hands on Sarah’s knees. “If we can’t take time to have a little fun once in a while then what’s the point, right?”
“Perhaps some of us don’t like playing as much as you Angelique.”

Angelique rolled her eyes at Mason’s sarcasm coming from the next aisle over.

“I have to admit,” Sarah interjected as she tried to change the topic, “it’s a little intimidating being among so many of you who have these incredible gifts.”

“Now, dear,” Angelique squeezed Sarah’s knees, “surely the granddaughter of a great sorcerer has some rather impressive gifts as well?”

Sarah suddenly got an extremely confused look on her face and withdrew from Angelique. “Granddaughter of a sorcerer?”

“And this is why I pretend to sleep.” Mason stated dryly.

“Oh,” Angelique looked extremely sheepish. “Oh my goodness, I had no idea Sarah. I’m so sorry. It was not my place to disclose…”

“Disclose what???” Sarah questioned rather aggressively.

Angelique leaned forward and answered Sarah in a near whisper.

“Dr. Nemitz was your grandfather.”

Queen of Lemuria

Lemuria

The following is the first draft chapter from the 2nd book in the Prophecy Trilogy, “The Dark Queen”:

250,000 B.C. (Age of Titans)

“Of this I am certain.  Our race is slowly being diminished by the effects of the planet we call Earth.  Therefore, from this day forward, I forbid all who have been born on Earth to contribute to our society’s population.  The only lawful procreation will be that which originates between the one thousand born of our home planet, Titanus.  Furthermore, all those who are Earth-born will henceforth be referred to as ‘Gods’ and will be recognized as a lesser race among us.  This I proclaim as law in order to preserve, as best I can, the integrity of our genetic breed.  The Titan race was chosen to pioneer new planets because of its superiority.  We cannot jeopardize the mission that was bestowed upon us by infecting Earth with lesser-beings.” – Cronus, King of the Titans

55,000 B.C. (Age of Gods)

Queen Odessa looked out at the volcano laden mountains from the balcony of her palace, admiring the kingdom that she and Hades had built together.  Rivers of lava flowed gently below bridges of obsidian that connected more than a hundred magnificent stone castles.  Perched upon each castle roof was one of Odessa’s dragons, the ‘Guardians of Lemuria’, with dozens more nesting within the mountainside.   The view reminded her of what seemed an impossible dream back when she and Hades had first fallen in love.

All they had ever wanted was to marry one another and start a family.  However, Hades’ father, Cronus, forbid it, believing that those born on Earth were weaker than those born on their home planet.  While Odessa was a member of the Titan race, Hades was a God and therefore deemed ‘unworthy’ by Cronus of fathering a child.  In order to help ensure that his son wouldn’t disobey his laws, Cronus forced himself upon Odessa, claiming that it was her obligation as a Titan woman to carry his child (much to her relief, Odessa later discovered that Cronus failed in his attempt to impregnate her).

Filled with rage from his father’s horrible act, Hades soon convinced his brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, to overthrow their father and free the world from his tyranny.  Each of his brothers had their own agenda: Zeus’ being his desire to procreate freely and Poseidon’s to rule the world; regardless of their individual motivations, their united cause ultimately proved successful.

Upon Cronus’ death, the three brothers swore an oath to one another to share power equally.  Zeus, in his typical overzealous nature, neglected to consult with his brothers and took it upon himself to grant amnesty to the entire Titan race.  Poseidon was outraged, believing the Titans should be punished for having followed Cronus blindly in his beliefs.  Ignoring Zeus’ proclamation, Poseidon immediately ordered the castration of every male Titan.  He claimed his actions were to prevent a re-occurrence of ‘Titan superiority’, but Hades suspected it was due to Poseidon wanting to remove the possibility of a direct Titan descendant ever challenging for power.

Poseidon’s harsh treatment of the Titans led to 150,000 years of turmoil between their two races, resulting in the extinction of every Titan (with the exception of Odessa) and the death of Poseidon’s Goddess wife, Nike.  Upon Nike’s death, Poseidon publicly disowned Hades, claiming his brother had betrayed him and his fellow Gods by choosing an ‘enemy whore’ over his own people.  Though Hades’ was sympathetic to his brother’s loss, he no longer deemed it wise to maintain ties.

Over the last thousand years, the tension between Lemuria and Atlantis had grown.  Hades feared that Poseidon would attack Lemuria in an effort to murder Odessa, thus he continued to build his kingdom’s forces.  Poseidon interpreted Hades’ actions as a challenge for power and grew his own army accordingly.  Though Zeus had long ago given up on the affairs of Earth and retreated to his home in Olympus to drink and womanize, he couldn’t bare the news of a potential war between his brothers.  Zeus decided that a treaty was in order and arranged for a meeting between the three brothers in Atlantis.

Odessa had advised Hades to let Zeus make the trip without him, telling her husband that she feared for his life.  Hades, however, refused to believe that his own brother would ever do him harm.  He insisted that “Zeus was right” and that the only way to ensure that peace remained between the kingdoms was to meet with Poseidon in person.  Hades and Zeus had now been gone for over a week without any news.

Odessa stood in silence, still taking in the scenery while her advisors shared their theories on what might have happened to their King.  She was growing weary of some of the more sinister plots that were being imagined when suddenly, the doors to the advisory chamber burst open.  Four Lemurian guards proceeded to file into the room, two of them holding what appeared to be an Atlantian dressed in a bright blue cloak that covered nearly everything but his forearms.

“Your Majesty!” called out the lead guard, a handsome young Lemurian with thick black hair and dark, storm cloud-gray skin.  His rank as a lead guard was made apparent by the single ruby implanted just above the chest plate of his armor.

Odessa looked up from her self-induced trance to see what the chaotic scene was about.  “Zeiruit,” she responded upon recognizing him, “tell me the meaning of this interruption.”  Odessa knew the young guard to be the son of Captain Myko, the head of security for all of Lemuria.

“My Queen, this Atlantian was found leaving a box at the entrance of your palace gates.  Our guards apprehended him before he could escape.”

Another of the Lemurian guards took his cue and moved toward Odessa, holding a small ivory box that measured only slightly larger than the guard’s hand.  He opened the box to reveal that it was empty.

“What was in the box?”  Odessa’s gaze moved from the empty box back to Zeirut.

“Nothing, your Majesty.  We searched both the Atlantian and the area around where he left the object, but we weren’t able to find anything.”

Odessa turned her attention to the Atlantian.  He was staring at the floor, his wrists bound with titanium shackles.  One of the guards holding him pulled back the hood on his bright blue cloak so that the Queen could see the Atlantian’s face.  He had long white hair and blue tattoos of the trident, the symbol of Atlantis, on each of his cheeks.

“What is your name, Atlantian?”  Odessa’s voice rang smoothly through the chamber as her twelve advisors, each clothed in a dark crimson robe, remained seated nervously around the large obsidian table in the middle of the room.

“My name is Lin, Queen Odessa.”

“Welcome to Lemuria, Lin of Atlantis.  I see you are a member of Poseidon’s Royal Guard,” Odessa reached out and softly touched the tattoos on Lin’s face. His skin tone was so light that it almost appeared translucent.  “Tell me,” she tipped her head slightly to try and make eye contact while he continued to stare toward the chamber floor, “why have you risked imprisonment on this day to bring an empty box to the doorsteps of my palace?

“My humble apologies,” he responded.  Lin raised his head so that his bright blue eyes stared directly into Odessa’s. “King Poseidon ordered me to bring the box to the palace of the great King Hades and his Queen, Odessa.”

“Yes, I realize you are no doubt following the orders of your Lord, but why an empty box?  Do you bring me news from King Hades?”

Lin maintained eye contact with the Queen, but remained speechless as his eyes glossed over in an apparent daze.  Odessa’s eyebrows furrowed as she grew impatient waiting for a response.

“Our Queen asked you a question!” Zeirut took a step toward Lin, his skin turning crimson, as he struck the Atlantian across the face with the back of his hand.

“Forgive me,” Lin replied, the right side of his mouth turning upward into an insincere smile.  “Your Queen’s presence has left me speechless.  I have heard rumors of her intoxicating beauty, but now I am able to see for myself what a marvel she is to behold…no doubt the result of her Titan bloodline.”

Queen Odessa could smell the insult hidden within Lin’s tainted words.  It was no secret that Poseidon had passed his hatred of her and the Titan race on to his followers in Atlantis.

“Enough with your paralyzed tongue!”  Odessa’s temper began to rise. “Why did you come to Lemuria?  Surely you did not believe that your presence would go unnoticed?”

“No, I surely didn’t,” he snarled back.  Lin threw off his cloak to reveal a pair of wings made of a shiny metallic material.  The guards stepped back, as did the Queen.

“What kind of wings are those?” Zeirut questioned as he and the other guards quickly drew their weapons.

“None, I’m sure, that you’ve ever seen before.” Lin used the edge of one of his wings to cut the chain in between the shackles on his hands.  The Lemurian guards responded by attacking him.

“You see, your Majesty” Lin continued talking as he engaged the Lemurians in battle, “my mission it to return that box to my Lord with your pretty little heart in it!”

Lin began spinning himself like a tornado, his wings becoming swift blades that proceeded to decapitate two of the Lemurian soldiers and injure a third.  Zeirut, the only soldier who wasn’t harmed during Lin’s attack, immediately placed himself between the Atlantian and his Queen.

“Security!” Zeirut shouted, hoping that the guards standing in the hallway outside of the chamber room would rush in to assist.

Lin picked up a spear off the reddish stone floor and rammed it into the mid-section of the injured Lemurian guard.  He then flung it through the air to smash the security keypad.  The thick stone door to the chamber closed, leaving the guards outside helpless to come to the Queen’s aide.

“You’re security won’t get here in time,” Lin grinned as he removed a short sword from one of the dead guards and attacked Zeirut.  It didn’t take long for him to defeat the noble guardsman.

Odessa’s advisors moved in front of their Queen to protect her, but their bravery proved of little consequence.  Lin quickly sent their souls to the underworld, their blood now staining the floor an even darker shade of crimson.

“So, Queen of Demons,” he smirked as he stepped toward Odessa. “It appears that I will have the honor of dispatching the last living Titan on Earth.”

Odessa could hear the pounding on the other side of the chamber door as her guards tried to break it down.  She glanced over to the balcony, but the blast doors had been triggered due to the smashing of the security keypad.

“Those doors won’t hold for long, Atlantian.” Odessa slowly stepped backward. “We have dragons, you know.”

“I don’t need long.” Lin retorted.

“You will not find me as defenseless as you might believe.” Odessa removed her long black robe to reveal a Lemurian saber attached to her belt.  It was the only piece of clothing on her otherwise naked, olive-toned body.

“I see you are more prepared than your husband was.” Lin’s eyes filled with malevolence as he shifted his sword back and forth between his hands.

“What do you know of Hades?” She growled, her right hand gripping her saber.

“I know only of your husband and his fool brother Zeus’ rotting carcasses being pitched over the Falls of Nike.  Don’t worry though; their heads still remain in Atlantis…on spears in front of the great gates of Poseidon’s castle.”

Odessa’s heart broke at the word that her husband had fallen, yet she refused to allow herself to die at the hands of an Atlantian.  She leapt through the air at the exact same time as Lin lunged toward her, their weapons clashing in a meeting of metal.

Lin rallied blow upon blow at the Queen, yet her resilience with her own weapon left the would-be-assassin unsuccessful.  The temperature of the room now grew warmer as small flickers of fire began sneaking their way through the cracks of the chamber door.  The Lemurian guards were no doubt using one of the Queen’s dragons to break through.

“You have skills in battle, Queen Odessa, but even if I am unable to kill you on this day, your kingdom will fall!”  Lin became more aggressive with his attacks, but to no avail.  Odessa continued to counter his strikes until the chamber room door finally exploded from the heat of the dragon’s flame.

Lin turned his back toward the opening, using his metal wings to shield him against the flurry of arrows now being unleashed by the Lemurian guards.  He watched Odessa quickly moving away from him and knew that his time had run out.

“Atlantis will be victorious on this day!” he cried out as he lunged toward Odessa in one final attempt to slay the Queen.

Before Lin could reach her, several Lemurian guards grabbed him, removing the sword from his hands and cutting the wings from his body.  The guards continued pummeling Lin with their fists until Odessa was certain he had been disabled.

“Enough,” she said, her jade eyes filled with fury.  Odessa took a few steps and stood over Lin who lay sprawled out on the floor. “Tell me, why did Poseidon have Hades and Zeus murdered?”

“Because they were weak,” Lin answered, his blue-tinted blood oozing from his mouth. “Atlantis is the only kingdom worthy of power on this planet…and Poseidon must be the only King left standing!”

The palace floors suddenly began shaking and several loud “booms” could be heard beyond the blast doors.

“Open those doors!” Odessa commanded.

One of the Lemurian guards quickly removed the damaged security keypad and began tying off the mangled wires.  After a few moments he was successful in opening the blast doors, revealing the war that had now begun.

“The army of Poseidon is at your doorstep!” Lin began laughing maniacally until one of the guards knocked him out with the blunt side of a sword.

Odessa stepped on to the balcony and watched as her dragon riders headed out to meet their Atlantian foes.  The winged soldiers of Atlantis, though much smaller than the dragons, outnumbered her army one hundred to one.  In addition, many of the Atlantian soldiers rode on the backs of armored Pegasus.

Tears formed in Odessa’s eyes as she witnessed the war unfolding that her husband and Zeus had tried so hard to avoid.

“It has begun,” she whispered to herself.

Hallows End Casting Call: Part I

Hallows End Casting Call Part I

“Hallows End” is the first book in the Prophecy Trilogy as well as the debut novel for Sarah Chase. Since I wrote the book while visualizing certain actors and actresses in the roles of my main characters, I thought it would be fun to share those.  If you’ve already read Hallows End, please comment below as to whom you pictured in the various roles.  AND, if you haven’t read Hallows End yet…it’s available right now in the Kindle Book Store for only $2.99! 😉

Olivia WildeSarah Chase

Actress: Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens)

A sexy vigilante police detective who goes from hunting immortal beings to saving the world alongside them.  I honestly can’t think of anyone who could fill the role of Sarah Chase better than Olivia Wilde.  I’ve been a fan of hers since she was on the TV Series House M.D. and I believe it’s time that she headline a movie.

Max Von SydowDr. Albert Nemitz

Actor: Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist, Needful Things)

When I first started creating the character of Dr. Albert Nemitz, it was Max Von Sydow who immediately came to mind.  His role as ‘The Tracker’ in “What Dreams May Come” exudes the same kind of wisdom and heroism that Dr. Nemitz exhibits as the founder of Hallows End and protector of the immortal races.

Lana ParrillaElise

Actress: Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time)

I only made it through the first season of “Once Upon a Time”, but if it weren’t for Lana Parilla I might not have even bothered to watch past episode one.  She makes being evil look sexy and deserves to play a character like Elise on the big screen where she’d be allowed to explore her full acting range under the freedom of an ‘R’ rating.

Gerard ButlerLord Artair

Actor: Gerard Butler (300, Olympus has Fallen)

Who else but Gerard Butler could I possibly hope for to portray Lord Artair?  Butler is one of my favorite actors in Hollywood and the fact that he’s Scottish had a huge impact on not only how I wrote the character of Lord Artair, but also as to where the original story of the prophecy took place (Scotland).

AnnaSophia Robb

Sadeana

Actress: AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia, Soul Surfer)

Sadeana calls for the perfect balance of innocence, toughness and an almost ‘esoteric’ presence on screen.  After watching AnnaSophia Robb carry the movie “Soul Surfer”, I was sold this young lady had what it took to be the ‘Child of Prophecy’.  Plus, those blue eyes…she’s got to have the genetic make-up of Atlantis within her, right?

Aisha TylerDiana

Actress: Aisha Tyler (Ghost Whisperer, Archer)

In order to fill the role of Diana, the Sheriff of Hallows End, you need both a mentally and physically powerful woman.   Aisha Tyler fits the mold perfectly as she stands at 6′ with an impressive physique and resume that includes numerous television roles, a role as Mother Nature in the Santa Clause sequels & co-hosting The Talk.

Stephen Root

Stanley

Actor: Stephen Root (Office Space, King of the Hill)

Stephen Root is perhaps one of the most diverse talents in Hollywood, having over 180 acting credits to his name since 1988.  It wasn’t until he showed up in True Blood, however, that he caught my attention and inspired the story of “Stanley” (which was actually a short story before I wrote Stanley’s character into Hallows End).

Audrey Kitching

Tremissa

Actress: Audrey Kitching (Fashion Blogger & Model)

I know…this casting choice is ‘way’ out there.  I have no idea if Audrey Kitching can actually act, but she’s certainly no stranger to the camera and her look is ‘spot on’ for how I pictured Tremissa.  Even her facial expression here captures the mischievous & suggestive nature of the “Candy Shoppe” boutique owner.

Sarah Chase Origins: The Nosferatu Murders

Sarah Chase Origins: The Nosferatu Murders

The following is the ‘Origins’ story of Sarah Chase, the lead character in the “Prophecy Trilogy”.  These events take place about a year-and-a-half before the first book in the series, Hallows End.

Detective Sarah Chase watched in her rear view mirror as the pick-up made its way down the gravel driveway toward an old farmhouse.  She had been following it for nearly three miles along the rural country roads that fell just outside of her precinct’s border.  The vehicle belonged to a couple of young men whom Sarah suspected might be part of the “Nosferatu” murders (as named by the press) that had been plaguing the city of Portland for the last several months.

The first murder had taken place at summer’s end of the previous year.  A female student from the local university was found hanging naked in a tree with the blood almost completely drained from her body.  The killers had attempted to make it appear as though the young woman was the victim of a vampire attack, evidenced by two small puncture wounds in her neck.  Since the initial killing, five more women from the university had all been murdered in the same way, each one occurring when the moon was at its fullest.

Sarah waited until she was well out of sight before parking her Camaro on the side of the road, a half-mile past where the pick-up had turned off.  She took a deep breath and turned off the engine, knowing what she was about to do could seriously jeopardize her career.  Chief Reynolds had denied her request to be assigned the case, making the actions she was now taking a dangerous turn back to the vigilante lifestyle she had tried to leave behind.

It had been almost fifteen years since Sarah was nearly raped and murdered in the front of her apartment building in Eastern Los Angeles.  Following a couple of days stay in the hospital, she soon began training at a local mixed martial arts dojo, determined to never be someone’s victim again.  Sarah spent most of her twenties hiding in the shadows, taking vengeance upon men who attacked innocent women.  Though she was 33 years old now and a respected police detective, there was still a calloused place in Sarah’s heart that called for justice, regardless of what the law permitted.

The grass crunched under her feet as she squeezed through a barbed wire fence and made her way across the frozen field that surrounded the farmhouse.  The low-hanging fog provided just enough cover that it was unlikely anyone would see her.  She promptly spotted the pick-up and three other cars parked in front of a faded gray wood barn, located about 50 feet from the farmhouse.

Sarah crouched down, her heartbeat picking up speed over the realization that she was greatly outnumbered.  To make matters worse, the sun was starting its descent toward the western horizon, causing the already cold air to tighten its wintery grasp around her body.  As she got closer to the barn Sarah recognized one of the cars, a steel gray Cadillac with a slight dent in its rear bumper.  It belonged to Bishop Morgan.

Earlier in the week, Sarah had visited Bishop Morgan’s church, the Brothers of Night, in order to question him about his church’s recruitment activities on the university grounds.  The church was under investigation for providing unlawful incentives to its all-male constituency, including prostitution services and narcotics.  During Sarah’s visit, the Bishop had been extremely uncooperative, citing “religious freedom” and threatening legal recourse if she tried to search the premises.

Unable to secure a search warrant, Sarah instead took it upon herself to follow Bishop Morgan and a few of the other members of his church around town.  She soon discovered that nearly all of the ‘Brothers’ were students at the university.  Sarah also learned that two of its members, the same men she had been following in the pickup, had been identified as close friends of Angelica Ruiz, the third victim in the Nosferatu case.

Sarah heard voices coming from inside the barn as she made her way over to the dilapidated structure.  She swiftly ducked under a broken window and peered through a crack in the warped planks.   One of her suspects, a tall blonde guy with a severe scar on his right cheek was talking to Bishop Morgan.

“Everything is set for tonight, Master.”

“As it should be,” the Bishop replied back, the arrogant tone in his voice grating on Sarah’s eardrums.  Bishop Morgan was a short man, with silver hair that barely covered half his head and a permanent scowl that accentuated his harsh demeanor.  “The moon’s cycles must be observed,” he stated coldly.

Sarah looked around as best she could, counting five men total, her two suspects, Bishop Morgan and another pair of young men who were carrying a coffin into the middle of the room.

“Open it,” Bishop Morgan ordered impatiently.  The lid of the coffin was lifted off to reveal a young woman tied up and struggling.  Sarah couldn’t actually see the woman from her vantage point, but she could hear the muffled cries coming from the wood casket.  There was no doubt in her mind that Bishop Morgan and the Brothers of Night were indeed the ones behind the Nosferatu murders.

‘Scarface’, as Sarah nicknamed in her head, walked over to the coffin and proceeded to inject the girl with a needle full of clear liquid. “That should keep her calm until tonight, Your Excellency.”

“Good.” Bishop Morgan appeared to be quite anxious as he had already taken his black gloves on and off twice in the short time Sarah had been watching.

“I must return to your fellow brothers to make the rest of our preparations.  Scott and Michael will stay with the girl to ensure she stays quiet while you two watch the perimeter.  Call me immediately if you see anyone.” As soon as the Bishop had issued his orders he began marching hurriedly toward the double doors at the front of the barn.

Sarah’s breaths quickened.  She drew her gun and hid behind a couple of rotting hay bales.  Since it appeared that the girl was safe for the moment, she pulled out her cell phone to text for back-up.  Sarah was only half way through her text when she heard footsteps approaching.  She tried to hurry, but before Sarah could hit ‘send’, a pale hand reached over the bales of hay, grabbed her left arm and launched her several feet into the air.

“Detective Chase,” Bishop Morgan snarled as Sarah landed on her tailbone, the cell phone flying from her hand and out of reach. “I thought I recognized your cheap perfume.”

Before Sarah could say a word, the Bishop lunged toward her; his hallow eyes filled with uncanny rage.  She took aim at his chest and fired, but the Bishop moved so fast that she missed his heart, hitting him in his left shoulder instead.  The impact hurled the Bishop back several feet, leaving him sprawled out on the ground, his black robe smeared with dirt and ice.

“Stay down or I’ll shoot you again you son-of-a-bitch!”  Sarah rose to her feet and pulled out a set of handcuffs from the back of her jeans pocket.

“Ha,” the bishop said mockingly as he slowly twisted his body to get up. “Feel free to continue shooting at me, Detective, but eventually you’ll run out of your precious bullets.” He turned toward her with an evil smile, exposing two elongated canine teeth.

“I said stay down!” Sarah yelled, her mind discounting the Bishop’s appearance as nothing more than a psychopath’s attempt to fool others into thinking he was a vampire.  Bishop Morgan stood up defiantly, forcing her to fire another round.  The bullet missed his temple by only a few inches as he soared through the air and grabbed Sarah by her throat.

“Stupid girl!” he growled, slamming her body up against the barn.  With the gun still held firmly in her hand, Sarah tried to point the chamber at him, but the Bishop anticipated her move.  He immediately grabbed the gun with his free hand, breaking two of Sarah’s fingers in the process.

“I think the time has come, Detective Chase,” the Bishop cast aside Sarah’s gun and squeezed her throat even harder as he spoke, “for you to know the truth about me.”  Just as he was about to sink his fangs into her neck, Sarah dropped the handcuffs and reached behind the small of her back with her good hand.  This time Bishop Morgan was caught off guard as she pulled out her spare gun and fired a bullet straight through his right eye.

The Bishop fell back screaming as he held both hands over his bloody eye socket.  Sarah regained her footing and, without hesitation, fired another round into the Bishop’s skull.  His body collapsed in a heap upon the dirt and gravel.

“Mother fucker!” Sarah gasped as she tried to recover from being nearly choked to death.  She knew the ‘Brothers’ would have heard the gun shots, so she quickly positioned herself right next to the Bishop’s body with her gun aimed at the front of the barn.  Sarah looked around to see if she could spot her other gun or her cell phone, but dusk had arrived and her vision was limited.

“Master!” She heard one of the men cry out.  Her attention returned to the barn as she watched all four of the Bishop’s minions filter out of the barn and come running toward her.

“Back off!” Sarah commanded.  All of them paused, though she could tell they fully intended to rush her. “I’ll shoot anyone who takes another step.” Sarah was ferociously working out a plan for her next move when suddenly the Bishop’s body began to stir.

“What the hell?” Sarah looked down and saw the hole in the back of the Bishop’s head slowly starting to heal.  She didn’t believe in vampires or anything of the sort, but there wasn’t any time to consider alternatives.  Instead, her instincts took over as she fired all but two rounds into the Bishop’s head, leaving nothing left to regenerate.

The Bishop’s followers briefly looked at one another and charged.  Sarah recognized the dangerous situation she was in and decided she couldn’t afford to show mercy.  She immediately fired her last two rounds, hitting one of the men in the chest and another in his abdomen.  She then braced for impact as the other two men jumped on her, slamming her to the ground.

Adrenaline rushed through Sarah’s body as she struck one of her assailants with a hard knee to the groin.  Her other attacker, ‘Scarface’, attempted to stab her with a knife which she quickly re-directed into his partner’s calf.  She then thrust her elbow into Scarface, shattering his nose.  He dropped to his knees right away, giving Sarah the perfect opportunity to swing her legs around his neck and snap it.

Sarah picked herself up off the ground and shifted her attention to the man with the knife in his calf.  He was doing his best to run away on one leg, but had only made it a few feet when she caught up to him.  A look of terror came upon his face as Sarah ripped the weapon out of his leg and plunged it into his heart, killing him instantly.

With her chest beating furiously, Sarah paused for a moment to catch her breath.  The sounds of violence that had filled the air gave way to a faint moaning that was coming from one of the men Sarah had shot.  She walked over to examine the bodies and found that while the man who’d been hit in the heart was already dead, the one who’d received a bullet to the belly was still breathing.

Sarah knelt down in front of the young man and stared into his eyes.  He was barely 18 years old, with wavy brown hair and a look of innocence that she seldom saw on the faces of the men she had killed.  He softly pleaded for help, but Sarah knew she couldn’t afford to have any witnesses.  Though her fury hadn’t entirely disappeared, she did manage to soften her eyes as she leaned over him and suffocated the young man with his own sweatshirt.

After taking a few steps toward the barn, Sarah stopped to look back at the Bishop’s mutilated corpse.  His head hadn’t grown back nor had his body turned to ash or done any of the other ridiculous things Sarah had seen portrayed in the movies.  Instead it just lay there like every other dead body surrounding her.

Her mind raced as she considered how to cover up the mess.  No one would understand why Sarah had fired so many rounds into the Bishop’s skull.  And while self-defense could justify her having killed the Bishop’s four minions, she still lacked a valid explanation as to what she was doing there in the first place.

Sarah entered the barn and opened the casket in which the young woman had been trapped.  She was completely unconscious, though luckily, still breathing.  Sarah carried her out of the barn and into the abandoned farmhouse.  There were no furnishings in the house, so the best Sarah could do was lay the woman gently upon the stained hardwood floor in the entryway.

Having collected every bullet she had fired, along with the items she had lost during the fight, Sarah dragged all five of the dead bodies into the barn and set it on fire.  After she felt confident that the fire had burned away any incriminating evidence that could possibly point to her, Sarah used a cell phone she found in one of the deceased men’s pockets to call 911.  Taking extreme care to cover all of her tracks, Sarah made her way back to her car and waited until she could hear sirens before driving off.

About half way home, the reality of what Sarah had just done began to sink in.  Tears formed behind her eyes, but not a single drop rolled down her face.  She felt both frustration and guilt, but neither of those emotions was anything new to her.  What had her truly rattled, however, was the question that continued to circulate in her mind.  Did she really believe she had just killed a vampire?

“Hallows End”: First Look with Author Leo Craven

Sarah Chase in Hallows End

With “Hallows End” slated for release on Friday the 13th this December, I wanted to take a few minutes and give some background as to what my new book is all about.

What kind of book is “Hallows End”?

It’s an Action-Adventure / Fantasy based in modern day about a vigilante police detective, Sarah Chase, who finds herself thrown into a world where myth and legend become her reality.  Sarah has spent the past couple of years hunting vampires and werewolves, which one night, leads her to the mysterious town of Hallows End.

Is this just another book about vampires & werewolves?

Where “Hallows End” differentiates itself from much of today’s popular literary themes is the broad inclusion of many supernatural and mythological elements (not just vampires and werewolves).  I’ve also tried to employ a more ‘adult’ writing style in hopes of catering not only to the more mature reader, but also to the readers of “Twilight” and other popular YA fanfare that are ready for material that’s a little more ‘grown up’.

So, is there sex and violence in “Hallows End”?

To a degree; those that are familiar with some of my past work know that I like to dabble in the horror genre and that I have, on occasion, crossed into the world of ‘taboo’.  While “Hallows End” definitely has some edgier moments, the amount of ‘adult content’ is still limited; in movie terms, I’d say it walks the line of “PG-13” and “R”.

Is this a ‘stand-alone’ book or part of a series?

“Hallows End” is part one of a trilogy that will revolve around our heroine, Sarah Chase.  While the first book primarily takes place in Hallows End, the remaining two books will follow Sarah into the heart of an ancient struggle between humans and ‘immortals’, the outcome of which will determine the fate of the world.

Who is the inspiration for Sarah Chase?

Jane Fonda’s character in “Barbarella” and Linda Carter’s “Wonder Woman” were my first inspirations to write a female heroine.  However, I’d say Kate Beckinsale’s character, Selene in the “Underworld” franchise was the catalyst to my creating Sarah Chase.  Having a heroine who was confident in her sexuality was a must in the style of book I wanted to write, but even more importantly, I needed a character that was tough enough to carry the fate of the world on her shoulders.

What is the #1 reason someone should read your book?

My intent with the Sarah Chase series is to entertain you while also introducing an entirely new version of the world that offers an alternate take on some of our greatest legends.  I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a traditional writer; instead, I prefer to think of myself as a ‘story teller’.  Everything I write plays out like a movie in my mind before I place a single word on paper.

How can I buy the book?

“Hallows End” will be initially released in e-book format on the Amazon Kindle, and will also be available by print-on-demand through Amazon.  Early next year there will be a limited print run, with each book numbered individually and signed, but distribution of those is still to be determined.

“Hallows End” Scheduled for Release on Friday the 13th this December!

Sarah Chase

I’m excited to announce that after a year’s worth of research, posting chapter drafts on my website and several re-writes, I will be releasing my first book “Hallows End” on December 13, 2013.  The initial release will be in e-book format, available exclusively through Amazon.

This first book follows police detective and vigilante ‘slayer’ Sarah Chase as she discovers the secrets of Hallows End, a small town filled with vampires, werewolves, goddesses and other legendary & mythical creatures.  “Hallows End” is the first book of the Sarah Chase trilogy, as well as the foundation for another series of books I have planned that will revolve around the town of Hallows End itself.

Vince Dawson: “The Island”

Vince Dawson - The Island

My name is Vince Dawson.  The year is 7518 and the universe has remained in a state of relative peace since the combined forces of the Alliance defeated the Krion Empire a decade ago.  While the Alliance won the war, we were not successful in capturing all of the enemy survivors.  Now, the remaining pieces of the Krion Empire lurk in the dark spaces of uncharted galaxies, waiting for the opportune time to once again plunge the free world into a state of chaos and destruction.   These days I am no longer an airstrike commander, but instead a hired gun and bounty hunter who travels the lesser known parts of the universe.  My most recent assignment has left me in a precarious situation on the planet Venus21…

“Honestly guys, I had no idea that the Admiral’s daughter was spoken for.”  I said as I tried to reason with the handful of guards that were accompanying me on our short ride from the Port of Helen to what the locals here simply called “the island”.  Evidently, it wasn’t enough to deny me the reward I was owed after I had rescued Admiral Nupon’s daughter from the Dugg pirate ship.  Now, the Admiral insisted that I be condemned to “the island” where he was certain I would meet my death; all because his daughter, Kaliss couldn’t keep her hands off me on our way back to Venus21.  Not that I had minded her being all over me; the Princess Kaliss was truly a knockout.  I just wished she hadn’t told her father that she no longer wished to marry the guy she was betrothed to because she had fallen in love with me.

I turned to the guard on my left as we continued towards the island on a small hovercraft.  “So, uh, what kind of survival gear you gonna hook me up with?”  I asked him sarcastically.  He was short, maybe 5’8 in his boots, and judging by his youthful appearance I guessed he was fairly inexperienced.  He looked rather nervous as he struggled within himself not to turn my direction.

“I’m a little sensitive to the cold so would you mind packing me an extra blanket?”  I gave him a big toothy grin, but still nothing.  Even with the restraints around my wrists and ankles, I figured I could have easily wrestled his gun away and taken out the rest of the guards.  However, I was concerned that I’d have to kill most of them in the process which would have gotten me into even hotter water with Admiral Nupon.  Instead, I decided to just face the island for the next 48 hours, swim back to the port and hope that the Admiral was too focused on his daughter’s wedding to notice my stealing my space ship back.

The hovercraft stopped several hundred feet short of the island’s shore and I could feel my restraints being removed by one of the guards behind me.  “If you guys wouldn’t mind, could you drop me off a little closer to the beach?  I’m a little worn out after having been with the Princess for all those days.  I know she’s the Admiral’s daughter and that she probably hasn’t been with a lot of guys, but you’d be surprised on how many times she wanted to…”

A surprisingly powerful shove sent me flying off the hovercraft and into the sea below.  The water was extremely warm, like the tropical oceans that I enjoyed during my childhood when we would visit my father’s family on Earth.  My father came from a long lineage of royalty though he seldom ever spoke of them after we left the solar system.  I was a teenager when the Krions first started terrorizing the weaker planets, and my father had to relocate us constantly as he was promoted through the ranks of the still forming Alliance.  I shook my head as my trip down memory lane ended and quickly swam to shore before the local sea creatures discovered my presence.

Looking above at the two suns in the clear, pinkish-blue sky, I considered taking a long deserved nap under one of the palm trees.  My skin was naturally on the darker side thanks to my father’s side of the family tree, but the ladies seemed to really go crazy when I had a nice tan.  Despite the vacation-like scene though, I knew I couldn’t just lie out in the open with no shelter or defensible position; especially considering I didn’t have any idea what I was up against on the island.  About thirty feet from the shoreline, the sandy beach turned into a dense jungle from which a rather large volcano emerged several miles within.  I began my journey into the thick, green foliage in hopes of finding both fresh drinking water and a place I could disappear into for the next 48 hours.

After about two hours of hiking I had made it to the base of the volcano.  There was a modestly sized lagoon with a stream running into it and a small, shallow cave that appeared to be uninhibited.  “Perfect” I said to myself as I went about fortifying my surroundings with a few traps around the perimeter.  I was also able to find a sharp enough rock to use for carving out a couple of spears from fallen tree branches.  The guards had taken just about everything useful out of my flight vest save a few protein bars, some matches and four condoms.  I was pretty sure the condoms weren’t going to be of any use on the island, but I suppose a guy never knows.

Just as I had finished my second spear I heard something approaching towards the stream.  I quickly retreated behind a boulder that stood a few feet from the entrance to the cave.  Whatever it was that approached was intelligent enough to avoid the traps I had set.  About a minute had passed when I saw a figure rush past my hiding spot and into the cave.  It was a woman!

“Hello.”  I said, doing my best to keep my voice from echoing too loudly.  The lagoon was partially surrounded by the side of the volcano making for rather less-than-ideal acoustics when one was trying to avoid being found by whatever it was that inhibited the island.  I moved from behind the boulder, lowered my spear and stood directly in front of the cave so that whoever was in there could see me.  Standing 6’5 and being built like a modern day god I knew I could come off a little intimidating so I proceeded in my most charming and gentlest tone of voice.

“There’s no need to be afraid.  My name is Vince Dawson, Airstrike Commander of the 15th Regiment. (The ladies always seemed to be impressed by the title.)  I’m afraid I’m currently occupying this particular area, but I’m sure we can work something out.”

“This is my domain pirate.  Leave now!”  She said from inside the cave.  Her tone wasn’t nearly as charming as mine had been.  I was tempted to go into the cave and bring her out myself, but I thought I’d give her another chance.

“I’m sorry, but I saw no evidence that this cave was being used by anyone.  Listen, I’m only here on the island for a couple of days so why don’t you just come out of the cave and we’ll talk this over.”  There was a long pause of silence and then a very young woman, barely in her 20’s emerged from the cave.  She had long brown hair that appeared it hadn’t been washed in days and eyes so green they matched the surrounding foliage.  She also had a rather nice form that I probably took a little too much time to admire.

“See anything you like pirate?”  She asked in a tone that I was smart enough to realize wasn’t sincere.  She lunged towards me with a dagger in her right hand and I quickly disarmed her.  She struggled as I held her against my chest with my powerful arms.  “Let me go you bastard!” She screamed.  I released her from my grip having taken her knife, and she turned towards me with fire in her eyes.  “Leave now pirate or I will kill you!”

“Listen honey,” the charm in my tone was gone. “I can appreciate that you don’t trust me and that it’s probably been a little scary for you on this island all alone.  However, I’m not you’re enemy and I’m not a damn pirate. I was just doing a job for the Admiral when I got detoured and ended up here.”  There was a pause in the conversation and I could tell by the way she was looking at me that she was trying to decide if she could trust me.

“Admiral Nupon?”  She responded.  “That makes sense why you’re on the island then.  The Admiral doesn’t like pirates cutting in on his business and he certainly doesn’t care for morons.” I was about to object to her insulting my intelligence, but she cut me off before I could speak.  “We’re not alone you idiot!”  She said as the she brushed a lock of hair from her eyes.  “Ogres roam this island.”

“Ogres?”  I asked, somewhat in disbelief.  I knew very little about Venus21, but my understanding was outside of a few spectacular beasts that roamed the oceans the planet was void of larger life forms.  The girl headed towards the lagoon, placed her cupped hands into the water and drank.  She was wearing a camouflage top and grey cargo pants that complimented her athletic build.  “What do these ogres look like?”  I asked.

“They’re green, ugly and about twice the size of you.”  She continued in between drinks.  “We call them the Hidoki and they are the original inhabitants of Venus21.  Humans murdered the majority of their race centuries ago when the planet was first “pioneered”.  What’s left of their race lives here on the island and the Admiral fancies them as his personal executioners.  Their intelligence is minimal, but they know the island’s terrain, they’re incredibly strong and they like to eat humans.  Of course, the pirates that are sent to this island deserve such a fate.”

“I’ve already told you, I’m not a pirate.”  I responded, quite annoyed with her repeated accusation.  Being called a pirate was just about the worst insult one could receive seeing as to how they had well deserved reputations for being rapists and murderers.  In an attempt to clear my name, I proceeded to tell the girl about my mission to save the princess and how it all was a misunderstanding between myself and the Admiral.  I then asked what her name was and why she was here on the island.

“Myra. My name is Myra, Mr. Dawson, and my being on the island isn’t a result of my choosing the wrong fuck buddy.  My parents were both banished to this island as a result of their opposing the Admiral’s reign.  The Alliance may have won the war against the Krions, but in the process they made deals with hundreds of corrupt warlords in exchange for military support.  I am on this island to rescue my parents and get them back to the mainland.”  As Myra spoke I knew of the “deals” she referred to.  The Alliance was formed out of necessity, not out of principle, and in order to amass the kind of army that could take out the Krions some arrangements and political appointments had to be given to less-than admirable individuals.

I had just asked Myra about her plans as to how she was going to escape the island when I heard the sound of several heavy steps approaching us.  “We’ve been speaking too loudly.”  Myra said as she jumped to her feet.  She began running in the opposite direction of the footsteps, but it turned out the Hidoki had already surrounded the entire clearing.  I quickly scaled up the side of the volcano under the cover of a few boulders and watched as the giant beasts scooped Myra up and placed her in a large vine sack.  There were too many of them for me to attempt a rescue so instead I followed them as they made their way through the jungle and back to their village.

Both suns had set by the time we had reached the Hidoki’s village on the other side of the volcano.  There were three moons that orbited around Venus21, but all were shining at a minimum tonight, making for poor visibility.  Rather than risking a botched rescue attempt in the darkness, I decided to remain in the protected rock formations above the village and wait until the first sun to make my next move.

The night had only lasted a few hours before the first sun peeked above the horizon with a magnificent display of orange and purple.  I looked below in hopes that none of the giants would be awake yet, but I was sorely disappointed.  There were already about 50-60 of the green, hairless beasts roaming about the village and unfortunately, Myra was being kept in a pit smack dab in the middle of everything.  The beasts wore no clothes and spoke in a language that was primarily comprised of grunts and groans.  They also had an extra eye in the back of their skulls which made sneaking up on them a rather unlikely scenario.

I searched my surroundings and discovered a large boulder several hundred feet above the Hidoki’s village wall that appeared to be unstable.  I made my way over to the boulder and pushed on it until I jarred it loose.  The boulder went flying down the side of the volcano heading towards the village.  I wasn’t actually counting on the other 20 boulders to follow, but thankfully I was able to jump out of the way before the landslide overtook me.  The Hidoki went into a state of panic as boulder after boulder crashed down upon their village and took out almost half of their outer wall.  All but one of them rushed to the village’s perimeter to investigate the chaos, leaving one solo guard between myself and Myra.

The giant stood at about nine feet tall and was armed with a crudely made spear.  As I made my way towards the pit I picked up a small stone, about the size of a baseball, and hurled it at the giant’s eye on the back of his head.  He screamed out in agony and turned to face me.  I dodged two swings of his spear, but could not avoid his left fist striking my chest which sent me flying back several feet.  The giant stood over me while I was laid out on the ground and raised his spear to skewer me like a human shish-kabob.  I rolled over at the last second, making the giant miss me as he plunged the spear into the dirt.  While he was bent over trying to free his spear from the hardened clay, I quickly swung myself over his shoulders and slit his throat with the knife that I had obtained from Myra.  The giant fell to the ground dead, oozing a purplish liquid from his neck.

I got off the beast and walked over to the pit where Myra was being kept.  “I think your boyfriend underestimated me.”  I teased as I cut through the thick green vines that covered the top of the pit.  There was a pungent smell of death and urine coming from below and I imagined that Myra was probably not to happy that she had just spent the night marinating in it.  As I helped Myra out of the pit I looked down to see if there were any other prisoners, but all I saw were the skeletal remains of humans.

“Thanks” was all that Myra could muster as we escaped from the Hidoki village.  Evidently it had been quite a blow to her ego needing to be rescued by the likes of me.  We forged through the jungle at a rapid pace; following a non-existent path that I was quite certain wasn’t taking us in the right direction.  It appeared that Myra was almost trying to out run me as she progressively built up to a full out sprint through the jungle’s thick foliage.

“Uh, you want to slow down a little.”  I said, trying not to yell too loudly in anticipation that the Hidoki had probably figured out that Myra escaped by now.  She was now out of sight, though I could hear her crashing about the bushes in front of me.  “Hey Myra, I don’t think you’re heading in the right…”  Before I could even finish my sentence I had been whisked up into a large net about twenty feet from the ground.  I couldn’t believe I had allowed myself to fall into a trap.  I went to grab the knife from my vest, but it was no longer there.

“Looking for this?”  Myra asked as she looked up at me and held the knife in the air.  “Yeah, I couldn’t have you escaping or they might still try to track me.”  Evidently, Myra must have taken the knife while I was reaching down to pull her from the pit.  “See you around pirate.”  She said as she ran off into the jungle leaving me hanging from a tree.  Fortunately, I still had the sharp rock in my pocket from the day before.  I was able to cut through the net in a matter of minutes and swung from its remains to the base of the tree.

I quickly scaled down the tree and hit the ground running.  Part of me wanted to follow Myra, but she was clearly more trouble than she was worth and I needed to focus on finding shelter and getting some rest before my swim back to the port.  I made it to the island’s shoreline by mid-day and this time I decided it was better to just build a make shift tent and take my chances in the open.  I had taken great care in covering my tracks so that the Hidoki wouldn’t be able to find me.  Besides, I was quite sure they were more interested in getting Myra back than to try and track the scent of another human they hadn’t even seen.

For a fleeting second the thought entered my mind that my own daughter would have been close to Myra’s age if she were still alive.  Mariana had only just turned eleven when her life ended, but I liked to think that she would have been just as strong as someone like Myra had she lived.  It wasn’t often that I allowed myself to think about such things, but the calming sound of the ocean and the tranquil scene of the low rolling tides brought a peace of mind that I seldom experienced.  I spent the rest of daylight building a small tent and took to slumber at the setting of the first sun.

The next day came with the first sun filling the sky with an impressive array of orange and blue shades.  I looked in the direction of Port Helen and sighed as I considered the swim ahead.  Never mind the fact that I wasn’t the strongest of swimmers, I also had no idea what kind of sea life would be trying to have me for breakfast on the way.

As I removed my boots and vest I saw what appeared to be a projectile with a white tail heading for the main land.  Suddenly there was a tremendous explosion and a large cloud of gray smoke formed above the port.  The sky seemed to part ways as a large battleship and several smaller fighter craft rained heavy laser fire upon Admiral Nupon’s city.  At first I thought it might be a Dugg retaliation, but then I saw the battleship come into full view.  It was the Krions.
